Are caffeine pouches safe?

What the evidence says about safety, sensible limits, side effects and who should steer clear.

For most healthy adults, caffeine pouches are safe when used sensibly and kept within normal daily caffeine limits. The risk is not the pouch itself but the dose: because caffeine absorbs fast through the gum, it is easy to take too much too quickly. Keep your total caffeine under 400mg a day and treat a pouch like the coffee it replaces.

How much is safe

The European Food Safety Authority says up to 400mg of caffeine a day, and single doses up to 200mg, do not raise safety concerns for healthy, non-pregnant adults. That 400mg is a ceiling, not a target. Everything counts toward it: pouches, coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks. A 100mg pouch is roughly one instant coffee.

Possible side effects

Too much caffeine can cause jitteriness, anxiety, a racing heart, headaches and trouble sleeping. Because pouches work quickly, these can come on faster than with a drink. Some users also notice mild gum irritation from holding a pouch in one spot; move it around and do not use back-to-back pouches in the same place.

Who should not use them

Avoid caffeine pouches if you are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding (stay under 200mg of caffeine a day, per the NHS), or if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or an anxiety disorder. If you take medication or are unsure, ask a pharmacist or GP. This is general guidance, not medical advice.

Are they regulated in the UK?

Caffeine pouches are treated as a food supplement in the UK, not as a tobacco or nicotine product, so the rules that cover nicotine pouches do not apply. At the moment there is no specific legal minimum age to buy them, which is why some experts are calling for one. A separate ban on selling high-caffeine energy drinks to under-16s in England is due from April 2027, but that measure does not cover pouches (gov.uk). Rules in this area are still developing, so treat under-18 use as off the table regardless.

FAQs

How many caffeine pouches a day is safe?

Count caffeine, not pouches. Keep your total under 400mg a day for a healthy adult (EFSA). A 100mg pouch is about one coffee.

Are caffeine pouches bad for your gums?

Holding a pouch in one spot can cause mild, temporary gum irritation. Move it around and avoid back-to-back pouches in the same place.

Are caffeine pouches legal in the UK?

Yes. They are treated as a food supplement, not a nicotine product. There is no specific minimum age law yet, so treat them as adult-only.
